first_imgWith Dead & Company tour in full swing, band members Bob Weir and John Mayer sat down with the Asbury Park Press ahead of the band’s New Jersey debut. The two guitarists talk extensively about building a large musical catalog with diverse influences, and how each are astute in hearing these influences and learning from one another.“When John plays blues, you can hear what subgenre he’s going for,” said Weir. “He’s real well-versed in particularly that idiom, but what that told me is that he’s basically a student and fan of American musical heritage.”He continued, saying “I could hear (Mayer’s) appreciation of the various fields, and that’s where our music comes from… We grew up — the guys in The Grateful Dead — grew up in an era in the Bay Area out here, where you had everything that America had to offer on the radio. And we were the kinds of kids who were just playing the buttons on the radio.”“If there was something playing that wasn’t catching our interest, we hit another button. We’d go from rock ’n’ roll to jazz to R&B or blues stations, classical music – whatever it took to grab our attention… And we were all different guys, but we all had that same approach, most particularly Jerry and I.” It seems Mayer has a similar mindset, something that Bob Weir finds endearing. Mayer chimed in about his own influences and mindset for building a diverse repertoire. “When you’re into music the way that Bob and I are, and you know, we’re separated by a lot of geography, a lot of time, but there’s a certain way to be in the music where it’s almost like collecting baseball cards… It’s like you collect the Texas blues card. You collect the Chicago electric blues card. You collect the country-western card.”“And it’s sort of like this love of all these different little cards you can collect and keep in a little stack and walk around with them in your back pocket.  It really for me was just about like sort of just getting another card or trading a card, you know?  And when musicians look at music that way, where it’s just sort of like this Rolodex of influences, it’s actually really great to have that conversation musically, and it’s just a matter of rearranging the cards a little bit.”That’s really part of the Grateful Dead magic, being able to go from folk to blues to funk in the drop of a hat. first_imgJimi Hendrix’s Band of Gypsys reinvented the traditional, Jimi Hendrix Experience vibe with its unique mosaic of sound and integrative acoustics. The original live recordings showcased a harmonious groove, led by Billy Cox‘s powerful guitar, Buddy Miles‘s percussion, and overall vocal mastery. This past weekend, Roosevelt Collier, along with Dopapod members Rob Compa and Chuck Jones and TAUK’s Isaac Teel, led a vibrant Band of Gypsys tribute at New York City’s American Beauty.Collier, a pedal-steel maestro and Hendrix aficionado, immersed the venue in rich, late 60’s era jams. As the industry heavyweight dazzled the intimate venue, each crowd goer was awed in his outstanding craft. Collier provides a sound that is truly soulful, rhythmic, and indicative of his remarkable talent. Compa (Guitar) and Jones (Bass) evinced their inventive sound while encapsulating Cox’s trademark Band of Gypsys feel. The duo approached Cox’s string-filled prominence in their prolific instrumentals that boast contemporary sound. Teel presented pure percussion mastery that assumed a unique approach to the craft with surprise vocals and respectful nods to Miles’s old-school talent. Collectively, each artist pursued his mastery in a compilation of groovy jams that paid serious homage to the infamous live album.The Band of Gypsys led the night with a setlist boasting tracks, “Who Knows,” “Changes,” “We Gotta Live Together,” and “Foxy Lady,” to name a few. While Collier soaked the evening in an upbeat atmosphere led by poetic steel driven notes, “Who Knows,” fluttered throughout the room in a vintage and psychedelic feel. Teel led the tune in his vocals, an instrument on its own, belting, “She didn’t know/ And she didn’t care/ She didn’t know/ She didn’t care/ And she go walking/ Down the street singing.” The robust tones of Teel’s vocals led the crowd into the infamous lyrics to later come together in harmony. Collective hymns are integral to the tune and indicative of the crowds’ undeniable enthusiasm. The band led the jam into, “Changes,” another track from the live album. Collier rendered the formerly dark and jammy track into a slow and harmonious rendition with impressive vocals. As opposed to emphasizing heavy instrumentals, the band illuminated its soulful side with intoxicating lyrics. Teel chanted, “It’s alright baby/ Yeah it’s alright,” while Collier laced the track with fluttering notes and contributive vocals. The delightful chorus hardened throughout the room in its dark and soulful haze. In true Jimi Fashion, Collier pronounced, “We’d like you to clap your hands,” as the crowd clapped and cheered the band drew out a thick jam that was brought into, “We Gotta Live Together.” The crowd cheered as Teel belted, “Home sweet home! Home sweet home!” giving American Beauty a sense that New York can be home to any who are in tune to admire.Intense bass took center stage as Jones dug out a ravine for guitarist prominence, complimented by Compa’s penetrating notes. Bass ensued, immersing American Beauty in an instrumental haze. Collier prompted the crowd, pressing, “Is everyone having a good time out there?!” as the crowd was clearly responsive in their cheers, he threw a head nod to the late Hendrix, proclaiming, “Enjoy this Jimi!” Compa and Jones continued in their guitarist prowess, caressed by Teel’s sound. A slow rendition of, “Fire” encompassed the room while Teel belted, “Let me stand/ Let me stand/ Let me stand next to your fire.” This slow and sexy rendition of the traditionally excited track had the entire crowd slow dancing and singing along to the enticing lyrics.Collier prompted the crowd with the night’s last song, an essential Jimi tune, “Foxy Lady.” Amongst the bands’ head nods, strums, and jamming that constructing this high energy cover, Compa poured his both his instrumental and vocal talent into its composition. Compa belted, “I’ve made up my mind/ I’m tired of wasting all my precious time/ You got to be all mine/ Foxy.” As Compa roared the sultry lyrics, the room was filled with a delightful, nostalgic haze that is beautifully trademark to the Jimi Hendrix sound. The night came to a close as the track struck a harmonious chord. Fans’ imaginations have been running wild dreaming up what band lineups may be formed from the extensive roster of musicians. Today, following the previous announcements of “The Road Goes On Forever: Celebrating The Music Of The Allman Brothers Band,” A Tribute To Jamiroquai, Eric Krasno & Friends, and moe.queous, Brooklyn Comes Alive has announced a trio of New Orleans legends: famed jazz pianist Henry Butler, influential drummer Johnny Vidacovich, and legendary bassist George Porter Jr.Funk fans of will need no introduction for George Porter Jr., who laid the foundation for funk bassists across the world with his landmark work with The Meters in the 1960s and 1970s. In recent years, Porter has transformed himself into one of the grandfather’s of the jam scene, and can be found touring with The Funky Meters, playing in New Orleans with his solo band the Runnin’ Pardners or at his weekly Monday night jam-session at The Maple Leaf, and in the studio laying down bass for other legends like Paul McCartney, David Byrne, and John Scofield, among others. His contribution to and love for the world of improvisational music is unmeasurable.Henry Butler is one of the most versatile piano players to emerge from the modern jazz scene in New Orleans. Butler hit the local scene in the mid-1980s and was quickly anointed his generation’s beacon of New Orleans jazz. Referred to as “the pride of New Orleans” by Dr. John, Butler’s playing is fast yet intelligent, with chords sprinkled up and down the piano while he solos with lightning speed.When the words “New Orleans” and “drummer” are mentioned in the same sentence, Johnny Vidacovich is one of the first players that comes to mind. The legendary jazz drummer broke out with Astral Project in the mid-1970s and has been hugely influential to local players, with Galactic‘s Stanton Moore and famed modern jazz drummer Brian Blade claiming to have been impacted by his work. Vidacovich is still playing with regularity down in New Orleans, and his fire continues to burn for the city’s vibrant live music scene.To say that these three musicians on one stage is a rarity would be an understatement. Outside of New Orleans, this combination of players feels even more like a fantasy.
