first_imgDES MOINES, Iowa – Drake University senior Kayla Bell (Bolingbrook, Ill.) has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Track & Field Elite 18 Award winner, the conference announced at the conclusion of the recent 2016 Indoor Championship.The Elite 18 Award is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average competing at the finals site at each of the MVC’s 18 team championships. The selection process varies for each sport, and winners are chosen from a list of nominations submitted by MVC institutions. Bell, who owns a 3.92 GPA as a psychology major, finished third in the triple jump and fourth in the long jump at last weekend’s MVC Indoor Championship. Her triple jump mark of 40-9.5 was just a quarter of an inch shy of her own school record in the event.Bell’s Elite 18 honor continues the Drake track & field and cross country program’s tradition of earning the prestigious award. Bulldogs have claimed seven of the last 16 Elite 18 Awards given in cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field. Current team members Emma Huston (Des Moines, Iowa) and Rob McCann (Mississauga, Ontario) are two-time Elite 18 Award winners.As an athletic department, Drake has now won 12 Elite 18 Awards since the start of the 2014 season.Bell, who is also the outdoor record holder in the triple jump, begins the outdoor season with the rest of the track and field team on March 18-19 at the Alabama Relays.Print Friendly Versionlast_img read more
