Other changes include growth in operating income and gross profit, but a slight drop in net sales.”Our stronger financial performance during the second quarter of 2019 signals that our recent strategic shift towards becoming a value-added and more diversified Company is the right direction for Fresh Del Monte,” said Mohammad Abu-Ghazaleh, chairman and CEO.“We believe that our movement away from being a volume-based business helped us navigate the challenges of adverse weather and low industry volumes far better than we would have in the past.”Rather than struggle against less-than-ideal market conditions, we are focused on ways to position Fresh Del Monte for further growth opportunities that we believe will drive profitability, and increase shareholder value over the long-term.”Net sales for the second quarter of 2019 were US$1.24bn, compared with US$1.27bn in the second quarter of 2018. This was attributed to a decrease in banana and fresh and value-added business segments, primarily due to lower sales volume and the weakening of currencies against the U.S. dollar in selling countries.Gross profit rose from US$78.3m to US$96.3m, thanks to higher profitability in all business segments, primarily due to higher selling prices of bananas in Europe and Asia and higher selling prices in the fresh and value-added segment.Del Monte said the increase was partially offset by increased fruit production and procurement, and ocean freight costs as well as the negative impact of unfavorable exchange rates.Meanwhile, operating income increased from US$13.8m to US$57.2m, which was attributed to higher gross profit, lower selling, general and administrative expenses and lower asset impairment and other charges, net.Business segment performanceIn the banana category, net sales decreased to US$440m over the quarter, compared with US$457.8m in the same period last year. 11 Comments Share Smith warned him that he needs to bulk up and watch out for defenders as he throws.“He looks like he needs to be in a weight room just as much as me, and then on top of it all, you’re going into the NFL … they have a license to assault you!” Smith said. “So even if you’re flinging passes, you could still get knocked upside the head after you release the ball.”That’s right, even though contact after the throw is illegal, it still happens in the NFL. Rosen needs to be careful of this.Smith acknowledged that he had no worries about Rosen’s ability to play football, simply his durability. I will make sure over the next decade or so they know they made a mistake.”Will he regret telling nine teams they made a mistake drafting him? Let’s go to ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith for comment.“Well yes, I do (think so), because I think he’s an idiot,” Smith said. “And I’m going to say it on national television, to this guy who’s supposed to be so intelligent, his IQ is supposed to be off the charts – enough of this already.” Stephen A. Smith, best known for saying his opinion loudly on ESPN’s First Take with Skip Bayless (and now Max Kellerman), thinks that Rosen is dumb for saying he should have been the first quarterback taken.Smith later clarified that he’s “not calling him an idiot literally, of course he’s a smart young man.”“I’m calling him idiotic, rather, because you are walking into the National Football League, going up against men,” he said. So, to backtrack: Smith doesn’t think Rosen is an idiot. South Australia is getting another boost to the tourism and export market with the return of Cathay Pacific’s fifth weekly service from 6 July 2017. The additional flight will see the premium airline increase its capacity on the route by 25 per cent and brings the weekly number of seats to 2500, as well as adding space for 15 tonnes of cargo.According to Nelson Chin, GM Cathay Pacific Airways Southwest Pacific, the airline sees Adelaide as an important destination: “We’ve not only seen increased numbers of tourists into Adelaide from mainland China, but also South Australians taking advantage of the one-stop connections via our Hong Kong hub. For example, it’s less than 23 hours to London, 13.5 hours to Beijing and Shanghai, and one-stop to New York in just over 27 hours. The airline, which has been flying to Adelaide for over 20 years, is proud of its involvement in encouraging tourists to visit South Australia. Leon Bignell, Minister for Tourism, said, “We are delighted that Cathay Pacific, one of our key airline partners, is increasing flights. The state has seen tremendous growth in tourism in the last year with our visitor economy at the highest level on record of $6.2 billion.”Mark Young, Managing Director, Adelaide Airport added: “This is great news for international travellers. Our customers have clearly shown their support for Cathay Pacific’s same-day connections to mainland China and this will provide further options for passengers as well as South Australian exporters.”South Australian produce also makes an appearance on board Cathay Pacific flights from Adelaide with leading skincare brand Jurlique featured in the Business Class amenity kits; d’Arenberg and RockBare wines currently served on board, as well as Maggie Beer ice-cream and quince paste, and Beerenberg Farm jam.
Go back to the e-newsletterandBeyond recently celebrated the success of its breeding program for Africa’s rarest antelope species by translocating four Aders’s duiker to a brand new breeding site on the island of Zanzibar. With between 300 and 600 Aders’s duiker remaining in the wild, andBeyond has been managing a breeding program for the species since 2005, when five of the antelope were introduced on andBeyond Mnemba Island, a private island situated off the coast of Zanzibar. With no natural predators and a large supply of food, the duikers have bred extremely well, with the estimated population on Mnemba growing to 35. As a result and at the request of the Minister of Natural Resources and Fisheries in Zanzibar, four animals were recently translocated from the island to form a new breeding population on Unguja Island.Experts were assembled on Mnemba Island for the translocation in early June, consisting of representatives from Zanzibar’s Department of Natural Resources, as well as Dr Dave Cooper, Head Veterinarian for the Provincial Conservations Department in South Africa, and Les Carlisle, andBeyond Group Conservation Manager. The translocation techniques used were influenced by prior research carried out by University of South Africa researcher Lorraine Braby, who had collared a number of the animals to collect information on their diet and behaviour as part of efforts to improve the outcomes of the breeding program. Darting the duiker had proved to be most stress-free method of capture and was therefore chosen for the translocation. The required darting equipment and drugs were provided by andBeyond and, with the placement of the tranquiliser dart on the animals absolutely critical, the skills of Dr Dave Cooper were called upon to dart four duikers. With the animals running off into the dense forest covering Mnemba on darting, they were quickly tracked, blindfolded and carried back to the loading area. The darts were then removed, the wounds treated and a sedative administered to calm the duiker before the antidote to the immobilisation drug was administered.Once all four of the animals were successfully crated, the crates were taken by boat from Mnemba to the main island of Zanzibar. The last leg of the duiker’s trip to their new home was by vehicle. The translocation process, which marks the first time that Aders’s duiker have been moved from Mnemba, is aimed at creating a brand new population of the endangered antelope on Zanzibar, while also ensuring that the number of animals on Mnemba does not exceed the resources available on the island. It is estimated that 25 to 30 duiker remain on the island and, should the animals continue to breed at the same rate, andBeyond plans to translocate 10 to 12 of the antelope every year.Go back to the e-newsletter

TORONTO – A growing number of Canadian listeners are playing their favourite tunes on streaming music platforms — and the shift in habits is giving a boost to playlists.Nielsen Music Canada’s latest survey of how people listen to songs and albums found that seven in 10 Canadians say they stream music using platforms like Spotify, Apple Music or Google Play. And of that figure, about 84 per cent of respondents dig into playlists on those services. It’s the first time the annual Nielsen “Canada Music 360” survey has examined how playlists are reshaping the way people access music in an era of growth for streaming companies.About 98 per cent of teen respondents — 13 to 17 years old — said they throw on playlists, which is two per cent more than people aged 18 to 34.Many in the music industry suggest playlists — often curated by streaming companies — are eclipsing radio as the way people discover and share music. But Nielsen found that despite those assumptions, radio still holds the strongest overall influence when it comes to launching a new artist or song to Canadian audiences.About 66 per cent of the survey’s respondents say they discovered new music on the radio, while a lesser 43 per cent heard it through streaming music services. Those radio habits appear to be shifting, however, as the number of respondents who said they listened to “over-the-air” radio at least once a week dropped six percentage points from last year’s survey, down to 58 per cent.Radio listenership is also heavily weighted in the older demographics, with 70 per cent of people 45 to 54 listening on a weekly basis.Nielsen conducted the online survey of about 1,500 adults over 13 years old between March 29 and April 10. They also conducted an additional survey of 100 people aged 18 to 34 to “bolster analyses” of the key demographic. The polling industry’s professional body, the Marketing Research and Intelligence Association, says online surveys cannot be assigned a margin of error because they do not randomly sample the population.Follow @dfriend on Twitter. A federal copyright board has raised the music streaming royalties for songwriters and music publishers by more than 40 percent. The decision announced earlier this weekend stems from a dispute pitting songwriters against steadily growing music streaming services sold by Spotify, Apple, Google, Amazon and Pandora. FILE – In this Oct. 2, 2018, file photo, then-Democratic Senate candidate Rep. Beto O’Rourke makes a campaign stop at Austin Community College Eastview, in Austin, Texas. After weeks of near-silence, O’Rourke is resurfacing on the biggest of stages, sitting down with one of the world’s best-known women in Oprah Winfrey with the chance to take back a 2020 spotlight that has lately been seized by a first wave of top Democratic primary contenders who have already jumped into the race. (AP Photo/Eric Gay, File) AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email by Will Weissert, The Associated Press Posted Feb 5, 2019 6:16 am PDT Oprah offers big stage for Beto O’Rourke’s re-emergence AUSTIN, Texas — Beto O’Rourke’s weeks of near-silence end on a massive stage when he sits down for an interview with Oprah Winfrey. The appearance Tuesday on “Oprah’s SuperSoul Conversations from Times Square” comes ahead of a possible presidential campaign and puts O’Rourke’s charisma to the test.O’Rourke dazzled Democrats last year by nearly defeating Republican Sen. Ted Cruz in the country’s largest red state. But his presidential prospects have been overshadowed more recently with the generally well-received 2020 campaign launches of Sens. Kamala Harris of California, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Cory Booker of New Jersey. After months of on-again off-again flirtation with a campaign, O’Rourke’s supporters say they’re ready for some clarity.“A lot of people have been projecting their own desires to see him run and they’re hoping that he will announce on Oprah, which would be so fitting,” said Nate Lerner, co-founder of Draft Beto, a group of Democratic activists who are raising money and building a potential campaign infrastructure should O’Rourke run. “I’m hoping he at least does give some indication of where he’s at.”Lerner may not even get that much, though. O’Rourke’s aides say he is still making up his mind on a White House run and isn’t expected to announce a decision during Tuesday’s taping.Still, his association with Winfrey could be helpful if O’Rourke decides to pursue a campaign. Winfrey’s endorsement of Barack Obama was pivotal to his 2008 campaign. She also took the rare step of campaigning for Democrat Stacey Abrams ahead of her near-upset in the Georgia governor’s race.Winfrey herself has been the centre of 2020 speculation, though she has said she doesn’t plan to run.Her show blurs the line between politics and pop culture. The lineup on Tuesday also features actors Bradley Cooper and Michael B. Jordan and philanthropist Melinda Gates, underscoring the sense of celebrity that surrounds O’Rourke. The taping comes amid the fallout of a racist photo on Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam’s medical school yearbook page. While all of the declared Democratic presidential candidates have demanded Northam’s resignation, O’Rourke hasn’t commented. That may change if he’s pressed by Winfrey.O’Rourke’s low profile in recent weeks has taken curious turns. He treated Instagram followers to a glimpse inside his mouth during a teeth cleaning while trying to decry the Trump administration’s border wall. He also recently travelled in Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas and Colorado, but his meandering online posts documenting the journey highlighted things like the open-face roast beef sandwich he had for lunch rather than offering hints about how he’d handle the rigours of a presidential campaign.Compare that to his potential 2020 rivals swarming states that kick off presidential voting: New York Sen. Kristen Gillibrand and former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper will be in South Carolina this week, Booker is visiting Iowa and Warren is set to formally announce her presidential bid Saturday, then hit New Hampshire and Iowa.O’Rourke’s camp points to his rejection of politics-as-usual — including shunning donations from outside political groups as well as consultants and pollsters while nearly knocking off Cruz — as proof that not following the 2020 pack can pay off.Though the taping is Tuesday, the interview won’t air on Winfrey’s network until Feb. 16. After that, O’Rourke doesn’t have another headline-grabbing event on his schedule — at least not yet. Will Weissert, The Associated Press
Michael Jackson estate lawsuit sues HBO over documentary by Andrew Dalton, The Associated Press Posted Feb 21, 2019 12:37 pm PDT LOS ANGELES — The estate of Michael Jackson on Thursday sued HBO over a documentary about two men who accuse the late pop superstar of molesting them when they were boys, saying the film violates a 1992 contract to air a Jackson concert. The lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court alleges that by co-producing and airing “Leaving Neverland,” as HBO intends to do next month, the cable channel is breaching a deal to not disparage the singer. The decades-old contract allowed the cable network to air “Michael Jackson in Concert in Bucharest: The Dangerous Tour” and included language that HBO would not disparage Jackson at any future point.According to the suit, the film implies Jackson molested children on the very tour that the concert footage came from.“It is hard to imagine a more direct violation of the non-disparagement clause,” says the suit, which asks the court to order arbitration and says damages could exceed $100 million. The film premiered in January at the Sundance Film Festival, where its subjects Wade Robson and James Safechuck received a standing ovation and took questions afterward along with director Dan Reed. The first installment of the four-hour documentary will first air on HBO on March 3, with the second half airing the following night. Britain’s Channel 4 will air it around the same time.HBO did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the lawsuit, but the channel has consistently defended the documentary in the face of complaints from the estate. The lawsuit states in its opening sentence that “Michael Jackson is innocent. Period,” and goes on to recount the criminal investigation and 2005 trial in which Jackson was acquitted, highlighting the conflicting statements through the years of Robson and Safechuck, who are described as “admitted perjurers” in the suit. Both men told authorities that Jackson did not molest them, later claiming they were abused in lawsuits filed after the singer’s death and in graphic detail in “Leaving Neverland.”It also reiterates the estate’s position that it was irresponsible for the film not to include any defence of Jackson from those who knew him or further fact checks of the men.HBO responded with a statement saying its plans to air “Leaving Neverland” remain unchanged.“Dan Reed is an award-winning filmmaker who has carefully documented these survivors’ accounts,” the network’s statement said. “People should reserve judgment until they see the film.”Reed is not named as a defendant in the lawsuit.“Michael is an easy target because he is not here to defend himself, and the law does not protect the deceased from defamation, no matter how extreme the lies are,” the lawsuit states. “Michael may not have lived his life according to society’s norms, but genius and eccentricity are not crimes.”___Follow Andrew Dalton on Twitter: https://twitter.com/andyjamesdalton .Andrew Dalton, The Associated Press AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email

(Photo by Richard Shotwell/Invision/AP, File) by Jonathan Landrum Jr., The Associated Press Posted Apr 17, 2019 8:34 am PDT LOS ANGELES — Motown Records founder Berry Gordy looked out at the audience at a 60th anniversary tribute to his groundbreaking record label and saw his dream of making music for “all people” in the world fulfilled.Gordy told the packed Microsoft Theater at the “Motown 60: A Grammy Celebration” that he wanted his label to bring people together from all walks of life through “a legacy of love.” The pre-taped concert, hosted by Smokey Robinson and Cedric the Entertainer, with an all-star lineup including Stevie Wonder, John Legend, Diana Ross, Meghan Trainor and Tori Kelly, airs Sunday on CBS.“My dream came true,” said Gordy, who started the African American label in 1959, building a roster that included superstar artists such as Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, The Temptations, The Supremes and Diana Ross.“I want to thank all of you fans, and your parents, and their grandparents. All around the world. I could say their great grandparents, but that would make me older than I want to be.”When Gordy launched Motown, he gave black musicians the platform to showcase their talents at a time when they struggled to get their records played on mainstream radio stations. His label introduced and helped launch the careers some of the biggest selling music stars from Gaye to Lionel Richie. His label paved a way for the Motown Museum to be built in Detroit. It was the first headquarters of Gordy’s music empire where Wonder, The Supremes, the Miracles and other performers recorded hits before Motown moved to California in 1972.“We didn’t even realize the impact of Motown,” said Gordy, who started the label with an $800 loan from his family. “In those early days, the unsung heroes had the courage to follow me down a road that didn’t even exist.”Some of Motown’s greatest hits were put on display during the concert, which was taped in February.Ciara danced onstage sporting a Rick James-like braided wig with beads during her rendition of “Give It to Me Baby.” Legend crooned while playing the piano during a cover of Gaye’s “Mercy Me” and Ne-Yo sang The Jackson 5’s “I’ll Be There.”“His music set the standard for those following him,” Legend said of Gaye.Ross, who was once signed to Motown as lead singer of The Supremes, brought attendees to their feet when she opened her set singing to Gordy while sitting next to him. After singing a couple of songs onstage, she returned back to Gordy and sang “My Man.”“This is your legacy,” Ross told Gordy. “I want you to know that you have been a gift to all of us.”Trainor, Kelly, Fantasia, Chloe x Halle, Thelma Houston, and Martha Reeves also took turns in a “Women of Motown” medley.Other highlights included the “First Four Bars” segment hosted by Cedric the Entertainer. The house band played several Motown hits and random audience members grabbed the microphone and sang the opening to songs like “My Girl,” ?Super Freak,” ?Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and “I Heard It Through The Grapevine.”___Follow AP Entertainment Writer Jonathan Landrum Jr. on Twitter: http://twitter.com/MrLandrum31Jonathan Landrum Jr., The Associated Press
